The Low Emission Zone (LEZ)

The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) covers most of Greater London. All roads (including those at Heathrow and the M1 and M4 motorways) fall within the zone. However, the M25 motorway is not included (even where it passes within the boundary).

Running your vehicle on Uptown Oil's biodiesel will lower the emissions by approximately 50%. This enhances your chance of obtaining a Reduced Pollution Certificate therefore saving a vast sum of money.

Euro I/II engines

Some Euro II and a few Euro I certified vehicles registered before 1 October 2001 may have sufficiently low particulate matter emissions that they will meet the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) emissions standards in 2008 without modification. However, these vehicles will not meet the higher Euro IV LEZ emissions standards in 2012 without modification.

Does your engine comply?

TfL has worked with vehicle and engine manufacturers to identify engines that comply with LEZ emissions standards. Remember, the engine manufacturer may be different to the vehicle manufacturer.

If your engine model exactly matches the details of the engines on the Eligible Engines List, you can get the necessary certification from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

* Euro I engines
Vehicles will only comply if they were registered before 1 October 2001 and have one of the following four Euro I engines: Cummins L10 350E 11, Cummins L350E, Volvo D12A, Volvo D16A.

* Euro II engines
Vehicles will only comply if they were registered before 1 October 2001 and have an engine manufactured by: Cummins, Daf, Detroit Diesel, Iveco, Isuzu Truck, Man, Mercedes, Renault, Scania, Volvo.
No other vehicles registered before 1 October 2001 will meet the LEZ emissions standards without modification.

Vehicles registered in Great Britain
If your vehicle is fitted with an engine on the Eligible Engines List and registered in Great Britain you will need to have it certified by VOSA, who will inspect the engine and perform a smoke test. If successful, VOSA will issue either a Reduced Pollution Certificate (RPC) or a Low Emissions Certificate (LEC).

RPCs and LECs will need to be renewed annually. The required test can be scheduled at the same time as your vehicle's annual test.

Vehicles registered in Northern Ireland
Operators of vehicles whose engines qualify for an RPC issued by the Driver and Vehicle Testing Agency will need to register with TfL, providing a copy of the RPC.

Operators with vehicles which do not qualify for an RPC but which have engines on the Eligible Engines List will need to register with TfL, providing a manufacturer's type approval certificate showing the engine make and model.

Vehicles registered outside Great Britain
Operators of vehicles registered outside Great Britain with an engine on the Eligible Engines List will need to register with TfL, providing a manufacturer's type approval certificate that shows the engine make and model.
